Subject: Please expand reproductive health programs in developing countries

I commend the efforts of the federal government in implementing the Feminist International Assistance Policy, which provides foreign aid for safe reproductive health and safe abortion.

The $18 million initiative to train abortion providers in Mozambique is effective and must be duplicated in many other developing countries if women’s health is to be protected. I ask that you please use a significant amount of the $1.4 billion to be spent annually (as announced in 2019 by the Prime Minister) to expand reproductive health programs throughout sub-Saharan Africa, as well as parts of Asia and Latin America where safe abortion is heavily restricted or unavailable.

Canada has been establishing itself as a global leader in advocating for reproductive health and rights. Now is the time to urge developing countries to decriminalize abortion, and to expand funding to prevent the needless deaths and suffering of women, girls, and gender minorities who are forced to access unsafe abortions.

Sincerely,

(Your name, address, email, phone)
