Alberta UCP resolution would stop public funding for third-trimester abortions

The United Conservative Party is holding its upcoming annual general meeting (AGM) on Nov 28-30 in Edmonton. They will be voting on a resolution to stop public funding for third-trimester abortions “except in cases where the physical health of the mother is at serious risk.”

Policy Resolution #29 can be found in the UCP resolution book on page 37.  The resolution is also included and refuted on our Fact Check table because it is rife with false anti-choice propaganda. It is a thinly disguised extremist anti-choice attempt to restrict abortion.

If approved by a vote and implemented, this policy would pose a threat to the lives and health of the most vulnerable pregnant people – those in the third trimester with fatal fetal anomalies.

While resolutions at party conventions may not make it into government policy or law, Premier Danielle Smith has a history of implementing them. In 2024, all 35 resolutions proposed at the UCP AGM passed, with 10 already in the process of becoming government policy.

ARCC is asking Alberta Opposition members to use our Fact Check table to speak out about the many falsehoods in this resolution and the dangers it poses to the health, lives, and rights of women and gender-diverse people who can get pregnant.
