Abortion Clinics and Services
PDF version of this list:
Explanatory Notes
This is a complete list of clinics across Canada, including dedicated abortion clinics or women’s health clinics at hospitals. Most providing hospitals are not listed unless they are the only facility, or one of the few facilities, providing abortions in that province or territory. Around 90-100 hospitals across Canada provide abortions, counting CLSCs in Quebec. In addition, some family doctors and primary care clinics prescribe medical abortions; contact the Action Canada hotline for information.
Doulas / Support: This list includes abortion doula services and other abortion support services, such as free rides to a clinic.
Abortion methods: Most clinics should provide both aspiration and medical abortions, even if our listing below does not mention medical abortion. Medical abortions are done using Mifegymiso, a drug combination of mifepristone and misoprostol. An ultrasound is not required, although may be advisable in some cases. An aspiration abortion refers to the “vacuum aspiration” method used in first-trimester abortions, which uses a
suction machine to remove uterine contents through the cervix. These are often referred to as surgical abortions, but no surgery is involved. After 12 weeks GA, surgical methods are generally used.
Gestational limits are indicated where known and are usually dated from LMP (last menstrual period). Gestational age (GA) refers to the current age of the embryo/fetus, while LMP is simply the time lapsed since the start of last menstrual period – GA may be up to 2 weeks less than LMP.
Funding: All services are fully funded unless otherwise specified. (You will need to bring a valid health card.) In Nunavut, medical abortions are funded provided the patient receives their prescription at a hospital, or they are Indigenous, on social assistance, a prisoner, or military personnel. In PEI, full coverage is available at the Summerside clinic, as well as through student health plans at universities/colleges.
